Literary Birthday - 12 December - Sophie Kinsella

Happy Birthday, Sophie Kinsella, born 12 December 1969

Seven Quotes

  1. Don’t be afraid to try different things — you may not find your best voice or genre straightaway. Make sure you’re enjoying whatever you write. And write exactly the kind of book you’d love to read yourself.
  2. I adore all Agatha Christie’s books and turn to them whenever I’m ill or need cheering up.
  3. The great thing about being a novelist is that you organize your own day.
  4. I try to write 1,000 words a day. Sometimes I do that by 11 a.m. Other times I’m still struggling at 3 p.m. Then it’s time to give up for the day!
  5. My real name is Madeleine Wickham, under which I write dramas with an edge of humour. As Sophie Kinsella it’s fast, all-out comedies, such as the ‘Shopaholic’ series.
  6. Philosophy wasn’t about facts, it was about ideas. My first essay title was something like: ‘How can you know what other people are thinking?’ I thought, ‘Wow, what an amazing thing.’ I really thought deeply for the first time.
  7. I need to make a cup of coffee before I start, otherwise I’m always thinking, When shall I make my coffee? instead of concentrating on my book. I switch off all the phones. I turn on the music loudly. If I’m feeling really energetic I might have a little dance around the room. (I’m very glad no one can see me!) I always want to feel upbeat when I’m writing. Then I sit down and begin.

Kinsella is an English best known for the Shopaholic novels. She also writes under her real name, Madeleine Wickham.
