Literary Birthday - 12 October - Julie Kagawa

Happy Birthday, Julie Kagawa, born 12 October 1982

Seven Quotes

  1. I do think you have to take each day as it comes and try not to get overwhelmed. It also helps that I love writing and the writing life, and when you enjoy what you do, it never truly seems like work.
  2. I find inspiration in a lot of places—books, music, video games—but you really can’t wait for inspiration to strike before you sit down to write. This is something I’ve had to learn the hard way. If you wait for that one fabulous idea, you could be waiting forever. Instead you sit down and make yourself write. Every day. Regardless of inspiration.
  3. The cover is what draws people to the book in the first place; it’s their first impression and what drives them to pick it up and flip it over. Book covers are very important. There are hundreds of books on the shelves; a beautiful, eye-catching cover is a must.
  4. Some writers like to work in other places like coffee shops, but I can’t – I’d end up people-watching. And if I were at a bookstore I’d be reading.
  5. The only difference between the published author and a non-published author is that the published author never gave up.
  6. Don’t ever stop trying to get better. Learn everything you can about the business. Read books on craft and the publishing industry. Start a critique group. Go to workshops and conferences if you can.
  7. Know that if you’re serious about getting published, you’re going to be rejected, and rejected often. It’s all part of the writer’s journey.
