Quotes on Writing

  1. I tend to write in the morning, when I am fresh. I walk the dog, drink coffee, and then sit down at the computer in my office at home. Or I go to the library, just to have fewer distractions. I work through the morning but the closer I get to being done with a book, the longer my day gets. When I am feeling like I’m near the end, I can spend many hours a day working. Earlier on in the process, I tend to work most effectively for four hours or so in the morning.
  2. I have confidence in my nonfiction — I’ve written six books. I know what that kind of book is shaped like. With novels, you don’t know where they’re going to go. All writing is a process of learning. I learned you have to cut and cut and cut. Big sections were in Good Harbor that died a healthy death, a good death, but it took me a long time to let go.
  3. I tell writers to keep reading, reading, reading. Read widely and deeply. And I tell them not to give up even after getting rejection letters. And I tell them to get support from other writers. (Not just criticism, but loving support.) And only to write what you love.
